Reminders for December 2013 Enrollment Dates
Alert!
December Enrollment Deadlines!
Don’t wait to meet these Important Enrollment
Dates for coverage in 2014.
Mark your calendar and call your HSA for America Personal Advisor immediately to get your 2013 and 2014 coverage in place before it’s too late. Below are the application deadlines for our health insurance plans we offer both on and off the health insurance exchanges. We can help you meet the deadlines for Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans, or non-ACA plans—on or off the health insurance exchange.
Deadlines vary, whether you choose from one of the following:
- 2013 Non-ACA plan
- 2014 ACA-approved plan on the exchange
- 2014 ACA plan outside the exchange
2013 Non-ACA Health Plans
If you are interested in enrolling in a 2013 non-ACA plan, you should do so right away. These plans are not required to accept all pre-existing conditions, so you will still need to complete an underwriting process, which makes the enrollment take a little longer than an ACA plan.
Non-ACA plans are likely to be much less expensive than 2014, particularly for people who do not qualify for a subsidy. There is still a little time left to get a 2013 plan, but you must act quickly. When you apply, be sure to request an effective date no later than December 31st.
Note that these plans do not qualify for subsidies.

ACA-qualified 2014 Health Insurance Exchange Plans
ACA-qualified plans are guaranteed-issue, meaning you cannot be declined nor have your rates higher than other enrollees simply because of a pre-existing health problem. You can also apply for an insurance premium subsidy depending on your income level. If your income is below 400% of the federal poverty level, you would qualify to possibly lower your premiums and out-of-pocket costs very significantly. President Obama extended the deadlines for enrolling on the federal exchanges to December 23rd for an effective coverage date of January 1, 2014. State exchanges are not required to extend their deadlines for January 1st coverage beyond the original December 15th date.

*For coverage starting in 2015, the Open Enrollment Period is November 15, 2014–January 15, 2015. This is an extension recently announced by the White House that differs from the original October 15, 2014 projected start date of open enrollment.
State-operated Exchange Deadlines Vary
State-run exchanges are not required to extend the deadline to December 23rd. But some are honoring the deadline. Connect for Health Colorado, for example, is holding to its December 23, 2013 deadline for deadlines for securing January 1, 2014 coverage. Similarly, California’s state-run exchange (Covered California) is also opting to honor the December 23rd enrollment for January 1st coverage.
Check with your HSA for America Personal Advisor with any questions about your particular exchange.
ACA-qualified 2014 Off-exchange Health Plans
Some insurance carriers are offering deadlines up to December 31, 2013 for coverage the very next day. Others offer much more imminent dates to get your coverage in place for January 1st. If you miss any deadlines and find yourself without coverage, you can still enroll in a short-term heath plan – an affordable safeguard while in between major medical coverage.
Your HSA for America Personal Advisor is always happy to help you with the entire process – from start to finish, year to year.
