1. Know your Options

You can choose an HSA-qualified plan that is approved under the Affordable Care Act, and covers all pre-existing conditions and preventive care. You may receive a subsidy if your income is below 400% of the federal poverty level.

Or you can join a health sharing program that works with a group offering HSA-qualified Minimum Essential Coverage. These programs are generally much less expensive than conventional health insurance.

2. Compare Plans and Rates

First get an Instant Quote and compare health insurance plans. Note that if you earn less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, your premium may be substantially less.

Always remember to check the physician list to make sure your doctor is in the network.

If you are in relatively good health, compare these rates with what it would cost to join a health care sharing plan.

If you are outside of open enrollment and don’t qualify for a special enrollment period, you can also sign up for a short-term medical plan.

3. Sign up!

You can enroll in a health insurance plan any time during Open Enrollment, in most states from November 1 – December 15, or if you qualify for a special enrollment period (due to a birth, marriage, divorce, move, change in income, or loss of existing coverage.)

If you sign up for an plan by the 15th of the month, your coverage will be effective as soon as the first of the following month.

You can sign up for a health care sharing plan any time of the year.
